The California 2025-26 legislative session begins Monday, January 6, 2025.
The 2025-2026 legislature:
Presently we have 60 Democrats and 19 Republicans in the Assembly
AD 32 is currently vacant – Kern, Tulare
2 are MDs – Dr. Jasmine Bains, Bakersfield and Dr. Joaquin Arambula, Fresno
We have 38 women in the Assembly
We have 30 Democrats and 9 Republicans in the Senate
SD 36 is currently vacant – Huntington Beach
We have one MD in the Senate – Dr. Akilah Weber, San Diego
Of the Senate Republicans 21 are women, a historical first, and a majorityfor the Republican caucus
California’s legislature is 49% women – 59 of the 120 seats
As noted above, there are 2 special elections to be held
The primary- February 25th and the election- April 29th

The special session will focus on bolstering California’s legal resources to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families.
